My shoulder & neck muscles have been feeling under-used lately. They often do: I spend most of my day at a computer, typing & using a mouse, after all.
Last time it happened, I took up jogging - you swing your arms around enough for it to be a big help. But it's just not enough at the moment, so we went swimming on Monday.
Altho we're at a pool most weeks, I'm usually in scuba gear - this was the first time I've done actual swimming in years. I felt it - my shoulder muscles were aching within a few lengths, but in a "Being over-used" way that was far better than the "Being under-used" way that caused me so much discomfort. So I resolved to try and swim more often. After all, it's the best kind of excercise, right? :o)
So Thursday night is scuba-club-at-the-pool night and I couldn't be arsed to cart my twinset to the pool. So I swapped it for a snorkel and travelled light :o)
But the pool is typically bloody cold, so I didn't leave my wetsuit at home. Ye gods, they should sell wetsuits in gyms for those blokes who are so eager to build up their biceps - rubber foam wrapped tightly around your arms doesn't half put a strain on bending the elbows. To say nothing of the extra drag you generate being covered in rubber & fabric instead of skin. . .
After a few lengths unassisted, I caved in & grabbed my trusty fins. The added thrust these generate was enough to pretty much cancel out the wetsuit's probelms, and I got a few more lengths in. Then I gave up altogether and spent ten minutes just splashing about.
Overall conclusion: Swimming and wetsuits don't mix. This is probably why dolphins aren't rubber-coated.
