I figured now was as good a time as any to get back into learning Blender, the free-software 3D modelling app and a perfect example of what I'm mentioned before about UIs: To make it powerful, you have to loose something in idio... I mean, user-friendliness.
So, I ran through the book's first example, which is to make a gingerbread man & make him walk. There's a few complications involved now that I have a slightly newer version of Blender installed, but I worked around them. And here's my little gingerbread man, complete with the mandatory (since Shrek) gumdrop buttons:

Having made a man, the next task is to animate him. The book suggests making him walk, but IMHO, a body like that is just made for doing jumping jacks.
Of course, it's a very primitive animation, but it's a start. Apparently, Blender's powerful enough that it's been used in films like Spiderman 2, so don't base your opinion of it on my feeble first efforts: Take a look at the gallery and see what you think. . .

Hmm.. new look for twitter? I hope it gets less "Ick! Change! Put it back!" nonsense than Facebook..
