I finally solved a problem that's been bugging me at work lately.
We process reports in my department. A while ago, I came up with a way of working out how many reports we had to process in a given day: It meant we could have a nice list on the wall & cross off each one when we took it to work on, and it meant we could see which days were going to be very busy & do some in advance.
The problem was, the deadlines aren't fixed: We have 20 calendar days to process a report, except for some which we have to do one working day in advance.
That means that normal reports get done on day 20, except on Friday when we have to do the ones for Saturday & Sunday as well. And the other reports get done a day in advance Mon-Wed, then three days in advance on Thu and Fri.
Which lead to some complications in a filter that simply looked for type of report & date we received it. In fact, I had nine filters: One for generating Monday's list on Friday, one for Tuesday & Wednesday, one for Thursday, one for Friday, and one for each day of the week for the forecast of next week.
Then the other day, it hit me: If instead of using a specific date, I could use a *range* of dates, and make it aware of what day of the week I was calculating it for, I could have just one filter that would work for everything.
It took me a bit of fiddling, and I had to resort to the net to find out how to make a reference to a cell value work in an autofilter (i.e. >=B2 doesn't work: It has to be =">="&B2)
But I did it, and I've tested it extensively, and it works. It even makes it easy to calculate oddities like the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend.
So I'm happy. Except that I now have to retrain people in how to generate the list when I'm not here. . .
