When you see yet another "Reasons to switch to Linux" article, you never see "So you can get rid of spam forever" listed as a reason. But it is one.
Firstly, if everybody were a typical Linux user, it would be extremely difficult to send spam in the first place. A typical Linux user has a well-secured computer, with a sensible firewall, minimal services, and a diverse collection of well-written software that is regularly updated with security fixes.
This is poison to spammers, who send a lot of their junk mail out from unsecured networks and botnets made up of compromised Windows machines. Eliminate the insecure machines, and spam becomes harder to send.
Secondly, a typical Linux user has a pretty good spam filter in place, and is pretty good at spotting the clever phishing mails that slip through the net: We know that email that begins "Dear customer" is almost certainly fake, and that if we think it might be genuine, we should not click on the link in the email, but go directly to the website and check it out that way.
If spam is mostly filtered out, and universally ignored, there's no reason to send it in the first place: Spam isn't sent by malevolent bastards who get their kicks by clogging up your Inbox (No, really, it's not!) - it's sent by greedy bastards who make money out of clogging up your Inbox. Make it unprofitable, and spam will go away.
Thirdly, spam typically advertises four things: Pornography, cheap software, cheap medications, and not-worthless-at-all degrees in any subject you care to name
And of course, a typical Linux user gets all his software free, already has all the qualifications he needs, knows exactly where to get pornography already, and therefore doesn't need Viagra
