I tried browsing the web the other day with a vanilla install of Firefox. Well, almost vanilla: I can't cope without mouse gestures. But vanilla apart from that.
Gosh, there's a lot of adverts on the web these days, aren't there?
I've talked about adblocks before, so I shan't repeat myself. But in the course of getting Firefox set up the way I liked it, I naturally installed Adblock, as I so often do.
I've used Adblock pretty much since I started using Firefox. Throughout all the upgrades, adblock has been a constant. The thing is, Adblock's development sort of stalled a while ago, and the result was that Adblock Plus came into being.
So I figured I'd have a try of Plus and see how well it worked. I isntalled it without de-installing Adblock first, and was warned that the two extensions would clash. But the result was that Plus imported all my settings from Adblock just fine, so when I did de-install Adblock, there was no annoying transition where I got bombarded with ads until I re-blocked them all.
I was also offered the opportunity to subscribe to adblocks maintained by other people, so they could pre-emptively block ads before I encountered them. But I declined that one: I prefer to block my own ads.
I gather Adblock is being actively developed again, but in the meantime, you might like to investigate Adblock Plus
