[Icon][Icon]I. . . I think it's. . . dead!

• Post categories: Omni, Technology, My Life

My PC was definitely working this morning, because I logged on for a few moments, and all was well.

But this lunchtime, just as I was about to leave, I noticed the monitor's LED was blinking, which it shouldn't. I went in, and the room was ominously quiet. . . no fan noise! And the router didn't have a light where it usually does in my PC's slot. Even turning the PC off doesn't turn out *that* light!

"Power cut?" I wonder briefly. But I can hear the dehumidifier running, and besides, my PC's on a UPS.

I push the power button. Nothing happens.

I check the UPS: It's on, it's full, there's no reason for there to be no power going to my PC.

I pull the PC out from under the desk and check the switch at the back: It's on. I flick it off & back on. Push the power button. Nothing.

Bugger. What the Hell's happened here?

Power cut? No, no signs of that. And I have a UPS. Power surge? Similarly, no signs of that, plus the UPS is a surge protector as well.

I couldn't spare any more time, I had to get back to work. I left it there, lifeless. . .

What's wrong with it, I don't know. I'm hoping just the PSU has broken, because that's a fairly cheap & easy replacement. But it's a good one (Antec) and there's no reason for it to have broken. The UPS should have taken care of any power fluctuations, and it's not like it was doing anything more that idling.

Lou's old PC is still lurking, I'll have to swap a few parts around and work out what's blown.

This is a real bugger. While I have been considering a new computer, I don't actually want one right now: I want to wait until I can get a motherboard with LinuxBIOS on it; I want to wait until I can get open-source graphics (I don't really want an Intel MoBo). It's going to be months before I can build the machine I actually want. This is not a good time for my current PC to wing its way to Silicon Heaven.

Get the motherboard checked, definitely. Also the processor...
