[Icon][Icon]Linux geeks use forums

• Post categories: Omni, FOSS, My Life, Shaving

Go on, admit it: You're not actually shocked by that particular piece of information, are you?

In the presentation I gave the my local LUG a few months back on why Linux users should blog, there was a part of it devoted to showing how blogs & forums and the like were important tools in building an online community.

I only mention it because I had an IM today from a chap on a forum. Specifically, a shaving forum which has been a useful source of advice since I switched from an electric to a safety razor.

Funnily enough, this particular IM from from somebody who has recently started using Linux. As we all did when we started out, he'd read some of the multitude of "Guides for newbies" that are available out there. One of which linked him to an article entitled (would you believe?) "Linux is not Windows"

And of course there's a link from that article to this blog, for people who want to post comments. Which he clicked on, only to think "That logo...that name. . .I've seen them somewhere before!"

Because of course, I used my usual name and logo on that shaving forum.

It's a small world after all. And it makes me wonder just how many other such connections never get made because people use different names & avatars on different forums.

I think we should try and organise a "World Tux Avatar Day" when every Linux user changes his/her logo on every forum (s)he uses to Tux for the day.

It would, I'm sure, be most enlightening for us to see just how big a proportion of online forum users we make up. And I'm sure there'd be a few Windows users interested enough to ask "What's with all the penguins?" so it could get a few more users involved, too.

Here's a decently-sized image you can copy to use as the avatar should you so wish :o)

That's a good way to establish online popularity. But I'm sick of online anyway and stick to my own little circle these days - happy if I get a comment or two on my blog.

I myself used to post at a lot of forums (including LQ.org of course) but I've stopped posting at all of them for a while now, except my own forum literaryforums.org and my brother's forum, toonsandcomics.com. I also have a policy that I won't submit content at community sites any more since it's not appreciated the way it should be. Communities suck, especially tech-communities. So I refuse to participate any longer.

No more third-party forums for me..

You know, I just thought of it. Why don't you make forums to go with your site? It might turn out good.

Just a thought.

Hmm.. hadn't really thought about that. I *could* set up a forum with very little effort - it can be auto-installed through my web host, even.

But I'm not really sure it would be used for much. I don't think I have enough readers to need a forum rather than comments to discuss my posts :o)

Full disclosure: I am the particular somebody that OneAndOneIs2 is speaking of. ;) It really is amazing how things are connected these days. Glad you joined us over at SMF. It's been a *huge* help to me in my shaving routine and I hope it's the same for you. Take care and happy shaving!

I shouldn't be surprised
'Linux is not Windows" has been linked hither and yon, for it has. It is becoming required reading for all newbies, and is a good eye opener for Linux vets too.

When you think about it a forum is just like a blog except that anyone can make a new topic and old topics that people post stuff in get bumped up.

Though a blog is sorted with time I guess.

The whole concept is also different. Forums are communities where the focus is not on individuals.

Blogs are individual-centric, even if there *are* multiple contributors to the same blog. The conversations in a forum tend to be multi-way, while in a blog they are usually focussed on a topic.

Also in forums, there can be many discussions going on at the same time, while in blogs, the most recent post tends to get the maximum attention.
