[Link][Icon]Christmas away

Yesterday, after a lot of messing around, I boarded a plane and set out across The Pond. I arrived and, after even more messing around, got to where I'm staying, where I managed to stay awake long enough to stave off jet lag issues.

So here I am in Phoenix, Arizona, where I'm spending my first Christmas away from the UK. It's weird - all these pictures of snow and penguins in a place that's usually scorching hot desert.

It's less than an hour away from Xmas back home, but it's still early afternoon here. So: Happy Christmas to everybody who reads this blog, hope you have a good one!

Why do English people say 'Happy Christmas'?

I always wondered.

^ Now that you mention it, that is odd.

Welcome to the U.S. again. You're actually not too far from me anymore.

Well, it's politer than wishing somebody a lonely and miserable Christmas, isn't it..?

No, we weren't criticizing the intent of your statement, but rather the way in which it was phrased. In the U.S. the equivalent expression is "Merry Christmas". Just a one word difference, but noticeable enough to point out :P

In England, we'll generally use "merry" in "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year", but when you're only talking Christmas, "Happy" is at least as likely to be used as "Merry" - same sentiment, really, when all's said and done..

Yes, of course it's the same sentiment, especially considering the fact that "Merry" and "Happy" are essentially synonyms :P

You can't even wish someone a Happy/Merry Christmas without it descending into an analysis of something or other...geek :-P

Merry Christmas, Dominic
