[Link][Icon]I'm not good at idling

In three weeks' time, I'll be moving out of my flat, putting my stuff into storage in France, getting some other stuff out of the way, and then heading off to wander aimlessly around the continent for an unspecified length of time.

In the meantime, there's nothing to do.

I don't have a huge number of friends, and they're mostly busy at work at the moment, oddly enough. I'm not dating anyone and my flatmate's antisocial. I don't have a job and with so little time it's not really worth looking for a temping job somewhere. I can't pack stuff away because it's too early and I've no space for all the boxes anyway.

I keep having virtuous moments of thinking "I could get back into learning C or Blender" but I just can't be bothered. I have no motivation to do anything but sit around reading or watching DVDs. And even that's boring now.

I have three more weeks of this to get through.

What do you DO with unwanted free time??

Learn another programming language - e.g. Python. ;)

I write. I find it both relaxing and cathartic.

When I'm bored, I start writing loads of Blog posts, most of which I never really complete - they're just topic 'bits' that sometimes come to fruition, but normally just stay saved for another day.

Good luck on your travels.

Well you obviosly don't know the PROPER technique for watching dvds. It's just mind-boggling you could get ever bored with so many movies/tv shows out there.. I've been watching tens if not hundreds of shows for years now and it never gets boring.
And yeah, learning a new programming language is nice too.

Python's on my list to learn after C. See above ;o)

I used to write when I was bored - blog posts and fiction. Inspiration seems to have deserted me, tho. There's nothing I want to write about.

Trouble with DVDs is, I've seen them all before and can't really buy many new ones. Maybe I should start meddling with BBC's iplayer...

I think it's called the doldrums...

Uhm yeah .. dvds that you *buy* .. of course .. *looks away*

Maybe you should take advantage of your situation and post more often than usual in your blog. I really enjoy reading your posts, you have some very interesting ideas (generally).

I check the blog on a daily basis and I for one would love to have more stuff to read.

And by the way, I doubt that inspiration is going to hit you square in the head if you sit idly by waiting for it to just *happen*.. you need to take some action. Time wasted is time WASTED. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

I was going to suggest forgetting about C and jumping right to python...

If I had all that free time I'd try to have a look at all the "free stuff" in my area, like the weird museum that's free on Tuesday afternoons, the (usually bad but hey you don't pay) concerts and the such.

And then I'd blog about it. Maybe.

Oh and... backpacking around the continent? Sounds awesome.

I'd suggest picking up the paper and getting really angry and then spewing out vitriol all over the whole blogosphere. That's what works for me :o)

Then again, aren't you due to be on strike some time soon? You must have a view on that, even if it's only "wow, awesome".

I think you should use your spare time with a nice jaunt out to LA to see your brother and sister-in-law :-)

Sadly, I'm not a fan of piracy.. and I don't have that much bandwidth, anyway..

C - I initially started programming by learning python, but I kept running into stuff I didn't understand because I didn't know enough about the fundamentals. C's better, as it doesn't get much more fundamental (short of assembly)

And yeah, hopefully the backpacking will go well. I have no better ideas what to do with myself :o)

Ray - there was a time when I did the whole flame war thing, but it always left a bad taste in my mouth. And I try not to read the papers these days.. I was going to write something about that "vitamins are bad for you" garbage the other day, but I never got around to it.

Teacher's strike is tomorrow, I don't know that striking's a good idea, but it's true that their salary hasn't increased to keep up with inflation for some years. And the occasional radio interview with some parent saying "It's a disgrace, teachers shouldn't be allowed to strike, I'll actually have to be a proper parent and look after my kids myself now!" tends to put me on the teachers side regardless ;o)

I *might*, just *might* try and fit in some time in the states in the next couple weeks. Hard to say for sure, as I do have all the packing and organising stuff to do here, but maybe.

What's occurring in October, Jess?

I've not got WoW, sinn3r, but I HAVE been playing "Darwinia" quite a lot lately...

Wow. That was a long comment :o) Cheers all!

Doesn't need to be a flame war, just get indignant :o)

I've always been in 2 minds about public service strikes - on the one hand I back the need for people to get paid fairly (though the tube union is just taking the mick these days), but on the other hand, it's very inconvenient to me personally ;o)

If you have a post about the "vitamins are bad for you" I'd certainly be interested in reading it.

Ray: I'll think about it!

Jess: And received! :o)

Victoria: It IS possible, you know. Try thinking of it in the context that water and oxygen are both poisonous in large doses ;o)

Dominic, come down to Chennai, India if you can. I'd love to meet up with you...

I can understand the "lack of inspiration" bit. The beginning of summer always seems to be a bad time for inspiration - it's when all the people like to take a holiday.
