I got back from LA yesterday, landing around 4pm. Slept for maybe a couple of hours in total on the flight.

Got to sleep in a bed (Wow! Novelty!) at sometime between 11 and midnight.

Woke up a few hours later. Got to love jet lag..

Determined to get a reasonable night's sleep, I closed my eyes and went back to sleep. Woke up feeling like a long time had passed, but looking outside and checking my watch, it was still early: half five in the morning.

Still determined to sleep, I managed another few hours of dozing. Oddly enough, it got darker in the meantime. Must be getting overcast - probably be raining soon..?

Oh well, 8ish is a good enough time to sleep until. Sod it, I'll get up.

"Good morning!"

"Morning? Try evening!"

Oh.

Ah.

It had been THAT sort of five o'clock earlier.

That explained why it was getting darker. I'd slept right through the whole day.

No wonder I was thirsty.

This is how you DON'T throw jet lag off quickly.

My coping mechanism is usually to either try to crash out at the UK bedtime on the plane or to just stay awake through the first night and hope that I'm tired enough the second night to go to bed at the correct time.

The trick to jetlag is to think in the destination's time the moment you get in the plane. If that is too hard you can comprimise and force yourself a bit the other way.

If the plane lands at night, sleep only at the begginning of the flight for a short amount of time. If the flight isn't really long don't sleep at all. Then you'll be tired and sleep when you land.

If the plane lands in the morning you must sleep in the plane the whole time.

If the plane lands during the day, catch some sleep near the end of the trip.
