[Icon][Icon]On the existence of God

• Post categories: Omni

I'm reading "The God Delusion" at the moment.

I'm up to chapter 3.

So far, it's annoying me.

But it had a link to this page and some of them have been cracking me up. Not least because I have firsthand experience of people using some of these arguments to convince me, back in the days when I used to debate such things.

Specifically, numbers 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 25, 32, 37, 38, 41, 42, 46, 51, 53, 55, 56, 58, 59, 61, 67, 77, 78, 80, 81, 83, 87, 88, 90, 92, 94, 97, 98, 99, and 100.

Those are the ones I recognised from the first 100. After that I stopped keeping track. There's over 500 of the things, after all. Numbers 39 and 40 are probably the funniest ones, tho..

For more discussions on refuting theists arguments, go to http://www.daylightatheism.org/ - a very well reasoned and readable atheist site.

The existence of God is not an issue that can be neither proved or disproved. It falls solely under the rubric of faith. All a thinking man or woman can do is to examine the world and universe as well as themselves and decide which seems more likely to them.

It is interesting though that every single civilization that I am aware of in history had a god in their cultural core beliefs. I am interested if any culture ever evolved that was atheistic from the beginning.

The best intellectual argument I ever came across in defense of belief in a God was in the first section of CS Lewis' (former atheist) "Mere Christianity".
