Frankly, this is more for my own use than anyone else's: I couldn't get a local copy of a website working because the .htaccess file was being ignored. I had to change a couple of config options in apache's httpd.conf, as detailed here to fix this:

LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so needs to be uncommented

AllowOverride None needs to be AllowOverride All

AccessFileName .htaccess doesn't need to be changed if you have a decent text editor installed O:o)
