[Icon][Icon]Following on..

Here's an interesting story on Ars that follows on from yesterday's "Windows 7 is almost as efficient as XP"

It's a statement from Intel that there are lots of computers that are at least three years old being used in industry, and it's about time they were replaced, dammit! Because "I don't think it's physically possible to put Windows 7 on them."

Hmm. Interesting statement from the hardware manufacturer there, don't you think? The day after much is made of how Microsoft has, for the first time, managed to release an OS without making it a resource hog that needs hardware upgrades or replacements - something which I might have been sarcastic about, but it *is* quite a big achievement for MS - we get told that computers that are happily running XP physically can't run Win7.

Hmm.

Hey, here's a thought: Since XP ran fine on them when they were new, and I've yet to encounter any good reason to upgrade to Vista or Win 7, how about just sticking to the hardware they've got and continuing to run XP on it?

You know, rather than paying for new hardware and new software just so they can do the same thing as before but with a fairly-poorly-implemented 3D interface.

Intel is currently trying to convince companies that it makes "overwhelming sense" to replace a three-year-old PC because of the increased cost of maintaining such old hardware

Increased cost?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't older hardware CHEAPER to maintain? e.g. My old PC had 512MB of RAM in it, replacing it would cost 7 pounds (Crucial RAM from ebuyer). My laptop has 2GB, replacing it would be 17 pounds. Both machines work just fine with their existing amounts of RAM, my PC has Gentoo Linux on it and my laptop has Vista.

Cheaper to maintain new hardware? Hmm...

The bit that I like most of all, though, is that Intel is telling everybody they should upgrade their hardware so they can upgrade their OS.

internally, Intel skipped Vista. The chipmaker is waiting on Windows 7

"Yes, I know *we* didn't upgrade, but that doesn't mean *you* shouldn't. Just because *we* saw no value in Vista..."

:o)

The news is such a great source of comedy. It's the people who take it seriously that make it scary.

I've noticed a disturbing trend recently on the Ubuntu Forums of new users wanting to get (unsupported) older versions of Ubuntu or Xubuntu (7.10 or 7.04), because they assume that the more recent versions would not be able to run on older hardware.

I've actually found Ubuntu 9.04 to give better performance than 8.04.

I like the motto of the Alameda County Computer Resource Center: "Obsolescence is Just a Lack of Imagination"

Yet again, it is just another way to earn more money. Once the population starts changing they will continue to do so - the hard bit is to get this process started.

Microsoft enforces social computing standards on what to use. If you aren't with the latest you are 'missing out'.

A good point to make - most people still think along these lines (where old software suits old hardware). Seeing as 7.04 is a 2007 version, technically it's not that old anyway.

The push for more power requirements every OS release makes both hardware and OS manufacturers happier. People see the next release not as a chore but a goal - something to achieve to be better.

The average Joe doesn't know why, but the latest is best than the last. We are the people who question why and ponder whether 'upgrading' really points upwards.
