[Icon][Icon]Into neti?

• Post categories: Omni, Health, My Life

No, that's not a weird phonetic spelling of "internet" :o)

I was at the local Whole Foods store earlier. I'd gone there for bread. It suddenly occurred to me while I was there that I should pick up some teabags as well. I was wrong - I got back and discovered a nearly-full box. But I'm glad I made the mistake.

For, whilst I was browsing the shelves for tea, I saw a strange-looking thing pictured on the side of a box. A neti pot, according to the label.

A nasal cleanser.

With a picture illustrating its use on the side of the box.

The knowledge that I was living in a country inhabited by people willing to pay sixteen bucks (plus another couple for the neti salt) for a small ceramic watering can that they use to pour salt water down their nose brightened up my day considerably. I was grinning the whole way home.

I did this- with an old teapot, and some regular non-iodized salt. The first time it worked great and really cleared my nose, and it felt like I had cured my hay fever! The next time, it BURNED. I guess I got the temperature/salt mix just right the first time as a fluke. Perhaps my nasal passages have recovered enough for me to try again, since the hay fever is back.

It's probably as effective as ear candles. :) But it is great that you can spot idiots by their shopping - they don't even need to talk to you any more, you can find out all you need to know at a glance.

@Alison: I can see where it might be something you want to do from time to time - kind of like inhaling steam. What made me laugh was that they're marketing a special tool for the job. Well, that and the photo of a woman with water pouring out of her nose ;o)

@Ray: You mean ear candles don't work?? [Smiley]

Ear candles work less well than acupuncture! And that woman looks so unhappy - she may be smiling but she's thinking "all those years of school, 4 years of college, acting lessons, and for what? all just so I can pour water in my nose and keep smiling." Meanwhile the frat boys in her local university are doing this with beer and for fun!

@Ray: Must you wear your ignorance on your sleeve?

Neti is an ancient yoga technique. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_irrigation
