[Icon][Icon]The Ribbon

• Post categories: Omni, Rant, Technology, My Life

I've been using Word 2007 a lot over the last couple days.

And I've said it before, and will probably say it again: The ribbon interface sucks.

I can maybe, maybe, believe that it speeds up the average point-and-click user once they get used to it.

But when you're a power user who does everything via keyboard shortcuts, there's nothing more frustrating than an interface that won't stay still and has wiped out all the fixed menus to make room for dynamic GUI buttons.

Gahhhhhh!!!!

Yes! The ribbon is terrible and there should be a way to turn it off and restore the proper way of doing things. All the stuff I use has either moved, been integrated or turned into an icon that I have to hover over to figure out what it is. It took me a good few minutes yesterday to find out how to turn off gridlines in Word.

Frighteningly, the OpenOffice.org people are working on a ribbon for it. Hopefully it's proof of concept only and will never be used.

I think I can just about cope with the Word ribbon, I really don't use all that much functionality there any way; but what really bites is Excel - where I use a lot of functionality but I don't know where to find it on the new version. Suffice it to say I'm not looking forwards to when my workplace "upgrades".

On the other hand my experience with OpenOffice Calc has been mediocre at best, not that there's a great deal wrong with it, it's just that Excel is a really good package.

I found the Ribbon to be a huge improvement for keyboard junkies like myself. It finally made all of the features of Word easily accessible via keyboard without having to learn shortcuts.

Hitting Alt+whatever highlights the next key to hit to activate whichever feature you need in that part of the ribbon. Makes it a lot easier to insert equations, fiddle with formating, etc.

To me it was the only good thing about Office 2007/2010.
