[Icon][Icon]Version go up, version go down

• Post categories: Omni, FOSS, Technology, My Life

I tried updating from Thunderbird 2 to 3 yesterday.

About ten minutes later, I downgraded back to 2 again. It was probably the worst upgrade experience I ever had from a Mozilla package.

The folder names were all blank, it lost all the server settings, it sat there maxing out the CPU on indexing without the slightest change occurring in the %age completed, it gave an annoying message every time I started it up..

Seems to be a universally-problematic upgrade. Has anyone successfully switched up to 3 yet?

I switched a few days ago, had a few problems with my imap-folders and mixed-up pop3 folder.
Some mailinglists made problems, too.

but now everything works as intended, after a few hours of tuning.

tried to install a new TB, not upgrading the old one?

Nope, have too much mail stored in Thunderbird to start from scratch. It has to upgrade from the old or it's no good.

Worked OK for me. I nuked my netbook to put Ubuntu 9.10 on it, kept my home partition and just installed Thunderbird 3. All worked fine, no broken settings or anything!

All my mail is IMAP. It's been indexing in what looks like a random fashion but it hasn't sucked all the processor. Been working fine for a couple of weeks now. I guess YMMV!

I upgraded a long time ago. The indexing was a little annoying for my GMail, which would have taken forever had I tried to do it, so I cancelled that, but let it index the other emails; actually quite useful for searching.

If there is only one thing that annoys me, it is that they removed the warning message you get when you try to send a message with characters the current encoding doesn't support, now it ignores the message and sends it in unicode, which can be a problem if you are sending mail to people who don't have unicode support yet and forgot to change the locale. (The warning message used to be my queue to change to the proper locale.)

I usually try to remember change the locale now, or get an email back saying it is gibberish every now and then.

Tried install a new 3.1 TB and then simply import your old mails?

Yep, on my work Win XP machine where it actually serves a business funtion. Upgraded smoothly, and short of switching the display so it didn't group all the inboxes of the various mail accounts in one place, it was all done and dusted, problem free, in a few minutes.

Hugely quicker now too.
