[Icon][Icon]Firefox personas

• Post categories: Omni, FOSS, Rant, Technology, My Life

*shudder*

I upgraded FF to 3.6 on my work XP virtualbox. The upgrade page showed me the funky new functionality that personas bring. Change your toolbar background, even have animated graphics!

Please, please, tell me there's a way to switch it off?

It all looks harmless enough until you mouseover one of them and your Firefox browser changes the way it looks.

Are they out of their minds?? They think it's a good idea to have a web page able to define how your browser looks?? Aren't pop-up adverts bad enough?? Do I have to resign myself to "Meet hot girls in your area now" adverts bouncing around on my toolbar if I upgrade??

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as I know, that roll-over feature only works on Mozilla's own sites, not on any random site. Moreover, it only works if you use Firefox's default theme. If you use any other theme, it will block the roll-over feature.

And finally, the roll-over feature is only a *preview*. you need to actually click on the picture to actually install the persona.

In any case, I've been using Firefox 3.6 for quite a while now and haven't had any problem. I've heard no one complaining about personas being used as pop-up ads either (anyway, I use AdBlock Plus so I never get any of those).

That's exactly what I was going to say. Plus, IIRC, Personas is just *images*, not an entire webpage. It downloads and caches the images (rather quickly), downloads a little file (CSS? I'm not sure) to say what the text should look like, and loads the theme. It's *completely harmless*. The feature is also entirely optional and only works on Mozilla sites. I LOVE FF 3.6 so far, and I actually find the personas rather useful. You can make a persona to have your browser fit in better with your window border themes. For example, this one fits in VERY nicely with the default Linux Mint theme: http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/55013.

You can still use AdBlock Plus/NoScript/TACO/Ghostery/Cookie Monster/whatever on FF 3.6. Personas are just an easy way to personalize your browser (my mom has Cookie Monster on hers and she LOVES it). If you don't want to use personas, nobody's forcing you to ^^.

Oops, I re-read your blog post and I messed up on my first couple sentences. You just thought it would let any webpage re-define your looks and I somehow thought you said that it would display a web page on your browser background. Nevermind!
