I came home the other day in the rain, and my hands were halfway numb by the time I got home. Next morning, I felt a real dislike for the idea of getting on the bike again.
It reminded me of similar experiences when I went scuba diving. I knew a number of novice divers, myself included, who thoroughly enjoyed going diving and seeing all the sights down there, etc. And yet when asked to go on one more dive.. no enthusiasm. Didn't like the idea at all.
Why was this? A fun experience that holds no appeal? Bit contradictory, it seems.
And the answer? In diving as in biking, it was the temperature to blame. Scuba divers in this country soon learn the importance of good quality diving suits: Without them, you lose heat far too fast. Cold dulls the senses and it's all too easy to not realise how cold you're getting. Your body remembers, though, and flags the experience as one it doesn't want to repeat.
So if you have a lack of enthusiasm for doing something that you think of as a fun activity, my advice? Wrap up warm.
I put the winter lining back into my jacket & attached the neck warmer. The weather ever since has been far warmer than I'd like, but I lost my distaste for riding to work almost immediately.

I'm in the Perl newsletter again. I should try and write about some other language...
