[Icon][Icon]Instant search

• Post categories: Omni, Rant, In The News, Technology, My Life

Anyone else found Google's new "innovation" really, really annoying?

I mean their "instant search" that returns search results as you type.

In other words, whenever you type in a search, you have to fight your way through a multitude of other searches that only looked for part of your search string.

It's already annoying the hell out of me. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea? It *guarantees* that for every search you do, you'll do a dozen others for something you weren't looking for in the first place.

Sure, there's times when it could be useful - looking for some hard-to-track-down item, you might like the option of quickly & easily doing multitudes of mildly different searches.

But turning it on by default?

Sorry, Google, I'm sure it took a ton of cash & ingenuity to get this stuff up & running. But the only good thing I have to say about "live search" is that it was very easy to turn the fecking thing off.

It doesn't (yet) work in google.co.in which is what my default google home page is.

Anyway I rarely use the google page directy. Always use the browser search bar.

I'm in favor of the instant search facility, it is useful for narrowing down your search... and I always want to narrow down my search, except for when I know exactly what I'm Googling for... and then most of the time it comes up quicker than it normally would... perhaps these are trousers that you have yet to grow into :).

I hadn't noticed. Mostly because I use the address bar to enter search queries, and I use the SSL version.

Looks like your second poster is somebody being paid to post comments on blogs on certain topics. I get them once in a while too. The URL is a dead giveaway.

As for Google Instant, it hasn't come to Malaysia yet but I've given it a try. Not supremely annoying, I think I can live with it. Google blocks Opera though so I had to masquerade as Firefox.

@hari & vincent: I use the browser search bar too, but I often then modify the search via the page itself, which is when it becomes annoying..

@Dion: It does look that way, but I actually know that commenter personally.

@pdh: You'll stop linking to SC when you leave next week, right? :P
