[Icon][Icon]2D barcodes

• Post categories: Omni, Technology, My Life, Programming

Because I've been writing an App for iPhone recently, I've learned a couple of things.

Firstly, I hate OS X.

Secondly, I don't much like iPhones either.

Thirdly, if you've seen weirdness like this around before:

Then you've seen a QR code, aka a 2D barcode.

I've seen them around before, but never known how they worked. Since building a barcode reader into an iPhone app, I've had to learn.

They're really very cool. They can encode a very large amount of letters and numbers, and there's generators for them available all over the place. And free readers for them for just about every smartphone going.

So if you have a smartphone and it's got one of the multitude of readers installed on it, you'll see that that the image up above has my own name, blog, and social media sites contained in it.

If I ever bother to print myself out some "business" cards (because I'm too lazy to spell my name when I meet new people ;o) I am *so* putting a QR code on it :o)

These things are all the rage in Japan.

I'm not sure what they are used for so much because I don't carry a cell phone, but it seems that a lot of times they are URLs to promotional websites.

I really don't get the point of them.

Wait wait, that is not what I should have commented at.

You use an iphone? an apple product? you write apps for them?

Blasphemy! :p

Mac OS X is really getting on my nerves too.

Sure, it's better than Windows, but Ubuntu got me hooked on knowing what the fuck it is that's happening when I click somewhere.

@sok: They can encode pretty much any text you like. URLs in an obvious & common use, but not the only one.

I don't use or own an iPhone, but the company I program for wants an iPhone app, so I make them apps. It'll be cross-platform for Android, tho..

@KK: It's even worse for me because I've gotten used to my own custom GUI on Ubuntu, so it's totally tailored for me. Switching to OS X is.. like going from custom-tailored fine clothing to a suit of Henry the Eight's old battle armour.

If you don't want your iPhone I'll take it. :)

I like OSX's gui, probably because I've used it so much that I'm used to it. at least it's unix-like, though I acknowledge it isn't "perfect" like linux. :)

@Dom,
I like these new codes too. We just finished to migrate our inventory-system from bar-codes to these new ones. Barcodes with their cryptic hashes were pretty unusable outside of infrastructure. Every team had to carry the whole database around with them (or needed somewhat stable internet), now they just need a smartphone. If not to talk about the time the database query took (5-6 sec every scanned code sums up high.)

@KK
Spare me the "Ubuntu is so awesome"-thingy, will you. :)
Honestly, its like if i were running around screaming "oh my god, ubuntu has become so fat and bulky, you cant be sure anymore, what is happening, if you click somewhere."

And that is something you surely cant be sure of, if you dont compile all your software after studying its source (and that of every used lib). (Pretty sure you do not do that, if you do otherwise, i didnt say anything.)

If you dont like it, fine, But dont run around and tell it everywhere you read the word OS X. Its pretty annoying to see this operating system bashing everywhere these times. (No i dont own a iphone but an old-fashioned mac.)

@Alison: I don't have an iphone, only a company one I borrow for developing on. Sorry :)

I'll happily admit my reason for disliking OS X is that I can't be bothered to try and learn it well enough that it at least stops annoying me by not acting the way I expect. But since the best I could hope for is that I would get to know it enough that it would only suck as much as Windows does, I don't have the motivation. FVWM2 remains my uncontested favourite :o)

@sinner: 5-6 seconds for a database query? Ye gods!

And.. yeah.. take a deep breath ;o)

I once *did* have a Linux installation that I compiled everything on it from source. It was fun, but it was a lot of work. I might do it again when I get my desktop PC back tho...
